You may have heard of the military method to get to sleep a while back. But it’s recently resurfaced on TikTok again.

@justin_agustin Technique to falling asleep in 2 minutes! Insp. AsapSCIENCE on YT #sleep #fallasleep #insomnia #insomniac #learnontiktok #howto ♬ You - Petit Biscuit

@Justin_Agustin on TikTok shows us how it’s done in the video above. But if you’re short on time, just follow these steps.

How to sleep using the military method

  1. Relax your facial muscles, jaw, and tongue

  2. Release any tension in your body by dropping your shoulders, keeping your arms loose and fingers relaxed

  3. Exhale to relax the chest, then slowly relax the muscles in your legs and feed.

  4. Inhale and exhale deeply, clearing your mind of thoughts and stresses.

  5. Visualise relaxing on a hammock in a dark room, or on a boat in a calm lake with clear skies. Whatever scenery you choose that keeps you in a calm place

Worried about your wandering mind? Bring the attention back to your breath, or keep thinking about the words “don’t think” over and over until you’re back in your calming visualisation.
You may not get this on the first try and that’s totally normal. It takes practice. But when you do, you’ll be out like a light in minutes.

Who created the military sleep method?

Sharon Ackerman was the first person to bring this technique about. It’s mentioned in a book titled “Relax and Win: Championship Performance.” by  Lloyd Winter.
It’s supposed to help you fall asleep in two minutes or less. So we can see why this trend pops up every now and then.

It was designed to help soldiers fall asleep in any condition or situation, by relaxing tensed muscles and focusing on relaxation. In scientific terms, this activates something known as the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for our fight or flight responses.

Supposedly, It takes about six weeks of nightly practice to get used to this technique, and it’s reported that 96% of people found it to be effective.

So get practising if you want to achieve a decent night’s sleep time and time again, especially if you want to survive group work at uni. Curious about other tips and tricks of the mind and body? Find out why a glass of red wine a day can be good for your health too!
