10 Best Squid Game Fan Theories That Make Perfect Sense
Some of these theories changed the whole way I perceived the show (even made me want to rewatch it!)
The super-hit Korean show Squid Game has taken the world by storm with its gripping storyline, endearing characters and plot twists that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Here's the trailer in case you want a sneak peek.
Here are the 10 of the most brilliant fan theories on the internet right now!
10. There Were Subtle Clues That Indicated How The Characters Would Die
If you paid attention, how the characters behaved in the outside world were clues on how they will die during the games.
For example, Sang-woo kills himself at the end of the games, and in episode 2, he was on the verge of committing suicide in the real world too.
The gangster Jang Deok-su died falling off the Glass Bridge, which is similar to how he jumped off the bridge in the real world when he was trying to flee from those thugs.
North Korean defector Sae-byeok dies by having her throat slit in the final game, which was exactly how she threatened her scammer who was trying to extort money from her.
9. The Plot Is So Complex Because It is Inspired By Theory Of Desire
In episode 2, there is a book on the table that is a reference to Jacque Lacan's Theory Of Desire. The theory states that desire is the opposite of enjoyment and that the players are symbolically dead which explains why they choose to play the Squid Game to resuscitate their symbolic life. This tik-toker @juliademederios explains it so well!
8. The card you choose when you play the Ddakji game determines your role in the game.
This one seems so obvious like it was hiding in plain sight. The first game that Seong Gi-hun plays at the train station is called Ddakji, where he has to pick between a blue and red card at the beginning of the game.
The theory claims that depending on what card you pick, you enter the game as a player or a guard! Tiktoker @lucy.what1 also claims that all the players picked blue, so it seems pretty legit.
7. The Guards Were Prisoners Or Criminals
They were cruel, had no hesitation in killing people, and lived in really shitty prison-like cells all pointing in the direction that they were all criminals and prisoners. My theory is that these criminals were convinced to come on board by being promised freedom from actual world prisons.
6. Oh Il-nam is Seong Gi-hun’s father
Probably one of the most popular theories on the internet right now, there were so many easter eggs that indicated that Oh Ill-nam was Seong Gi-hun father. For example, both of them thought the marble game set-up was similar to where they live, Il-nam knew when Gi-hun's birthday was and how he was certain Gi-hun was a troublemaker as a kid.
5. Gi-Hun Getting Off The Plane Saved His Life
According to Redditor IActuallyKnowNothin, “They were going to blow up the plane,” referring to In-ho and the VIPs. The plane accident was foreshadowed when one of the VIP's said "Rich or poor, in a plane crash you are all the same" and would explain why the Front Man insisted that Gi-hun gets on the plane.
4. Gi-Hun And Il-Nam’s Numbers Are Symbolic
The Redditor 7DSPride prefaces their theory by saying "it's mainly symbolic.” This means, Gi-hun number represents the End of the Squid Game as a long-running institution. On the other hand, Il-nam is numbered 001, because he represents the start of the game.
Could this perhaps be a clue that he successfully takes down Squid Game to an end in season 2 maybe?
3. Jun-Ho Isn’t Dead
Not going to lie, I screamed at my screen when Jun-ho fell off the screen, but from what I learned through Squid game's plot twist with Oh Ill-nam’s character - if there isn't a body, the person is not dead. Plus, he was shot in the shoulder, so...
Jun-Ho has so much more potential for the show and there is so much to explore with his character. What's the story with him and his brother? Did the videos and photos get sent? So many possibilities and so much potential to develop this character more!
2. There Were Clues that Oh Ill Nam Was The Mastermind Behind The Squid Game
From the get-go, there were little clues that indicated that Oh Ill-Nam wasn't like everyone else. I did find it odd how he was so excited he was to move forward during the red-light, green-light game. You ok old man? Tiktoker @danawang did a smashing job in spotting all of the easter eggs!
1. The Walls Of Their Sleeping Quarters Had Major Clues
In the end, when it's just 3 beds, you can see illustrations on the walls that was a literal description of what games they would be playing! Imagine the frustration of struggling when the answer was right in front of you, The squid game really was a horrible mind-game as well, wasn’t it?
